Placement
Each Minnesota state university operates a career services office that helps students plan their careers and find jobs.
The job market for teachers varies a lot by teaching field and location.
- Minnesota public school superintendents report the most difficulty in finding science, special education (emotional behavior disorders), technology (industrial arts) and English as a Second Language teachers.
- Other fields, such as physical education, elementary education and social studies, often produce a surplus of applicants for Minnesota teaching positions.
Some regions of the country and urban areas are experiencing severe teacher shortages. In competitive teaching fields, graduates who are willing to move can find jobs more readily than candidates who need to locate in a particular area.
In 2002-03, 1,800 students graduated from Minnesota State Colleges and Universities with undergraduate majors in programs specifically designed to prepare teachers. (Other graduates qualified for teacher licensure by completing liberal arts majors or graduate programs.) During the next year, graduates were asked whether they had worked in a job that was related to their major. For graduates with teaching majors, 85 percent had worked in a job that they considered related to their educational program. Not all of these graduates worked as public school teachers.
